The family of James L Gowan is saddened to announce his death in the morning of Sunday, June 2nd at the age of 85. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to many and will be missed. Jim was born on July 12, 1938, in Chester, PA, to Albert S. and Gladys E. (Smith) Gowan. His family later moved to the St. Louis metropolitan area where he met his wife, Barbara (Schaefer) Gowan and started a family together. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Albert J. Gowan, and his daughter-in-law Sylvia (Keith) Assaad. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, his daughter Rebecca (Christopher) Waller, and sons Scott (Lori) Gowan and Keith (Sylvia) Gowan, grandchildren Jessica (Art) Waller-Armour, Kiersten Waller, Samantha Gowan, and Jonathan Gowan. He is also survived by numerous cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews in addition to three great grandchildren, Christopher, Joshua, and Alexandria, all of whom he enjoyed dearly. A former Mayor of Hillsboro, Jim also served his community as an Alderperson, a Trustee for the Eagle Ridge Subdivision, a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, and a substitute teacher at the Area Technical School of Jefferson College. Prior to his retirement, he enjoyed a varied career as a mechanical engineer, designing processes and equipment in several industries, in which he earned four patents and several other intellectual properties. Jim was also very proud to have served his country as a staff sergeant in the military. In addition to being a sailing enthusiast, Jim enjoyed playing guitar and other instruments, and playing games with friends and family. He will be missed. Honoring his final requests, the family is not planning a funeral, but will instead have a small memorial to celebrate his life with family. |
