Shirley A. Thomas, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away June 21st, 2024 in Houston, Texas at the age of 89. She was born November 4th, 1934 in Jefferson City, Missouri to her parents Bernice Vernon Hedger and George Johnson.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Jere Lee Thomas in 2013 and her parents Bernice Vernon Hedger and George Johnson as well as her stepfather John Hedger. She is survived by her children Stephanne Ploeger and Jeffrey Thomas; son-in-law Lennis Ploeger; grandchildren Alexandra Ploeger, Abbegaele Ploeger, and Dane Ploeger.
Shirley and Jere’s marriage was an inspiration spanning 56 years and was a testament to their value of respect, support, and commitment. Their journey together began in DeSoto, MO as high school sweethearts and took them many places including Keywest while Jere was in the Navy, Rolla,Missouri where they both worked to support Jere receiving his degree in engineering at Missouri School of Mines and carrying them to Kennedy Space Center and Johnson Space Center where Jere supported the early NASA missions and New York, Delaware and Texas working for various companies in the aerospace and petrochemical industries before retiring in Waxahachie, TX.
Shirley’s life was one filled with support and commitment to family values and to those she held dear. She led by example throughout her life – always showing kindness towards others while embodying respect and unwavering commitment. Shirley found immense joy in witnessing the success of her children and grandchildren which she considered as her greatest accomplishment.
A joint memorial service will be held at Dietrich Funeral Home followed by entombment where Shirley and Jere will be laid to rest alongside each other once more.
The loss of Shirley has left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known her. Her legacy lives on through the memories shared with loved ones and the promise of things yet to come for her children and grandchildren.
