Bernice E. Deaton was born in Poplar Bluff on July 10, 1926 a daughter to Victor and Ada Belle (nee Kearby) Rice. She died at Hillcrest Care Center on January 20, 2023 at the age of 96. Bernice had been a very active member of First Baptist Church-De Soto. She also enjoyed playing Bridge and St. Louis Cardinal Baseball. She had retired as a service assistant for Southwestern Bell Telephone. She is survived by her two sons: Larry (Fances) Deaton, De Soto and Don (Liz) Deaton, Ballwin; six grandchildren: Matt (Shelly) Deaton, Mike (Dawn) Deaton, Molly (Brent) Hanlin, Becky (C.T.) Jones, Will (Monica) Deaton and Katie (John) Falk; and sixteen great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lester Deaton; two sisters: Beatrice Rice and Betty Lockamy and five brothers: Harold Rice, Earl Rice, Carl Rice, Calvin Rice and Theodore Rice. As an expression of sympathy memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 9370 Olive Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63132.
